Durango Guide & 4 Day Itinerary (2026)

🍂 Durango is one of my favorite Colorado towns to visit in the fall. The changing leaves are absolutely magical, and there are so many things to do that you could easily spend a long weekend exploring. It’s about a 6–7 hour drive from Denver, making it the perfect destination for a long weekend getaway. I put together my Durango fall bucket list + 4-day itinerary to help you plan your trip, from scenic drives and hot springs to mountain towns, incredible restaurants, and one of the most scenic train rides in the country. 🍂 Things to Do in Durango

1. Ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad 🚂

This is one of the most scenic train rides in America and is an absolute must-do when visiting Durango.

The train winds through the San Juan Mountains before arriving in Silverton, a charming historic mining town. The train ride takes about 3.5 hours each way, and you'll have time to explore Silverton and grab lunch before heading back.

If you want a little more time in Silverton, you can also take the bus back to Durango instead of riding the train both ways.

Fall tip: This is one of the best ways to see the changing leaves without having to drive!

2. Soak at Durango Hot Springs ♨️

Relax and take in the mountain views at Durango Hot Springs. They have several pools, including a family-friendly area and adults-only spaces.

It's the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring, especially on a crisp fall afternoon.

3. Drive the Million Dollar Highway 🍂

If you're driving to Durango from Denver, do not miss the Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Silverton.

This is easily one of my favorite drives in Colorado during the fall. The scenery and changing aspens are absolutely incredible.

Just be aware that this is a high-elevation mountain road with steep drop-offs and can feel intimidating if you're not comfortable driving on mountain roads.

If you're nervous about the drop-offs, I recommend driving from Silverton toward Ouray, as you'll generally be on the inside lane rather than next to the edge.

4. Explore Mesa Verde National Park

Spend a day exploring Mesa Verde National Park, home to some of Colorado's most incredible ancient cliff dwellings.

You can drive the Mesa Top Loop and explore several overlooks and archaeological sites, or book a ranger-guided tour to get inside some of the cliff dwellings.

5. Listen to Live Music at the Diamond Belle Saloon 🎶

Step back in time at the historic Diamond Belle Saloon in downtown Durango. Grab a cocktail and enjoy live ragtime music in this charming historic saloon. Check their website for the current live music schedule.

6. Shop at Honeyville 🍯

Stop by Honeyville for one of the cutest shops in Durango. Everything is honey-themed, from jams and sauces to honey-infused treats and even whiskey. It's a fun place to pick up a unique Colorado souvenir or gift.

🍽️ Foodie Spots

1. Derailed Pour House

One of my favorite spots in Durango! They have a fun menu, a massive cocktail list, scratch-made food, and charming railroad-themed decor.

2. James Ranch

Stop at James Ranch for a fresh burger made with beef from their own farm. They also have a cute market where you can shop for local products and goodies.

3. Chimayo

Known for its scratch-made Southwestern and Mediterranean-inspired dishes, Chimayo is a great spot for dinner in downtown Durango.

4. The Bookcase & Barber

Looking for a hidden gem? This secret speakeasy is tucked behind a barbershop.

You'll need a password to get in, so check their website before you go. Shhhh… 🤫

5. Perbacco Cucina Italiana

A delicious Italian restaurant that's perfect for a cozy dinner after a day of exploring.

6. Blue Wing Coffee

Formerly known as Smiley Cafe, this charming coffee shop is a great place to grab coffee and breakfast before a day of exploring.

7. Durango Steamworks Brewing Co.

Grab a local beer at Steamworks Brewing Company, a Durango staple and a great place to relax after a day of adventures.

🏡 Where to Stay

1. Blue Lake Ranch

My personal favorite! This charming bed and breakfast has the cutest Southwestern-inspired decor and a peaceful setting outside of town.

My family has been staying here since 2014, and it's always one of my favorite places to stay when visiting Durango.

2. The Strater Hotel

If you want to stay right in downtown Durango, check out the historic Strater Hotel.

This grand Victorian hotel has beautiful historic details and is located right in the heart of downtown, making it easy to walk to restaurants, shops, and nightlife.

3.Holiday Inn and Suites

Budget and family-friendly option. Located close to downtown, making it easy to walk to restaurants, shops, and nightlife.

🍂 4-Day Durango Fall Itinerary

Day 1: Million Dollar Highway + Durango

Drive Denver → Ouray → Silverton → Durango

Start your road trip from Denver and take the scenic route through Ouray and Silverton via the Million Dollar Highway.

Take your time stopping for photos and enjoying the fall colors along the way.

Continue to Durango and check into Blue Lake Ranch.

Then head into downtown Durango for dinner at Derailed Pour House and spend the evening walking around the shops downtown.

Day 2: Train to Silverton

Start your morning with the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

I recommend booking the open-air gondola if available. You'll get incredible views along the route, but make sure to bring layers because it can get surprisingly cold at higher elevations!

Once you arrive in Silverton, explore town and grab lunch at Handlebars Food & Saloon.

For the trip back, consider taking the bus instead of the train if you want some extra time in Silverton.

Head back to Durango for dinner at Chimayo, then end your night with live music and a cocktail at the Diamond Belle Saloon.

Day 3: Mesa Verde + Hot Springs

Start your morning with coffee at Blue Wing Coffee, then head to Mesa Verde National Park.

Spend the morning exploring the park, driving the Mesa Top Loop, and checking out the incredible cliff dwellings and archaeological sites.

Afterward, stop at James Ranch for lunch before heading back toward Durango.

Spend the afternoon relaxing at Durango Hot Springs.

Then stop by Honeyville to browse their unique honey-themed products and pick up some souvenirs.

Head back into downtown Durango for dinner at Perbacco Cucina Italiana, then end the night with a cocktail at The Bookcase & Barber.

Day 4: Telluride + San Juan Skyway

Grab breakfast in Durango before starting your drive along the San Juan Skyway toward Telluride.

Spend some time exploring Telluride and ride the free gondola for incredible views of the surrounding mountains.

If you have time and the trail is open, hike to Bridal Veil Falls, then explore downtown Telluride before continuing your road trip.
